Get Them to Stay and Read Awhile

by
A picture can tell a thousand words. Sometimes it easy to figure out what those words actually are, like when you are browsing a product catalog and a ring photo is next to a description of the stone count, ctw, and metal type.

Sometimes the pictures are used for navigation through a website, like when you have photos of a bracelet, wedding band, engagement ring, watch, earring, and a pendant on the first page of your product catalog. In that situation, the user intuitively knows that to click those photos to visit each jewelry category. The best quality photos will get the most clicks on that page.

The first thing you are inclined to do when you pick up a book is flip through looking for pictures. Sure you might buy the book and read it, but those pictures lure us all in. From storybook days as children we all know that the details of the pictures will be reviled through reading.

Online there is a seldom used technique that will help engage your website visitors, and entice them to read more on your website rather than just browsing your product catalog. The technique is simply to use captions below your images.

Professional news websites will caption their photos all the time, but that proper technique is not employed much in personal blogs or on jewelry websites. Instead, you might simply want to place a photo next to the correct paragraph; but you can't always rely on that placement because web browsers sometimes force the flow of your words to change.

The next time you decide to put a group staff photo on your site, make sure a caption is there to list the names. The next time you put a jewelry photo on any page of your site, make sure the caption includes the basics, like "ELLE Hammered Collection Silver Ring."

Some people are in too much of a hurry online to read everything you have to say. But throw in a few images with captions and you can grab their attention real fast.

Image captions take extra time and effort to include below every photo throughout your website content, but the payoff is well worn the effort. In your analytics you will see more return visitors and longer times that people stay on each page of your site.
