Using Alternative Domain Names: Practical SEO Guide

by
Using Alternative Domain Names: Practical SEO Guide daily-golden-nugget-1302-66
In yesterday's Nugget I quickly showed you how to read the Google Analytics Acquisition Channels Report. I quickly mentioned that you can use the "(Other)" channel to see how well your offline and online ads are running, but that type of information doesn't just magically appear; in...

Domain Name Renewals: Practical SEO Guide

by
Domain Name Renewals: Practical SEO Guide daily-golden-nugget-1296-30
A couple of weeks ago, I wrote a warning about the latest domain name scams that are sent through the mail. Those types of scams are trying to trick you into spending unnecessary money with them, but they are not stealing your domain name from you.

With so many domain name scams around, it's difficult to recognize when you get a legitimate domain name renewal notice. Those notices are e...

Summerlin Jewelers Website Re-Review

by
Summerlin Jewelers Website Re-Review daily-golden-nugget-1265-51
This is the Friday website review edition of the Daily Golden Nugget. Usually I choose a random city around the U.S. to find a retail jeweler, and this week, in honor of the Las Vegas jewelry shows, I'll search around Las Vegas, Nevada.

The following is a screen grab when I searched for "jewelers in las vegas." The top listed store is The Jewelers of Las Vegas. They have updated their website since I last re...

Setting the Preferred Domain for Your Website daily-golden-nugget-1083-29
For today's Daily Nugget, I'm answering a direct question that came in from one of my readers. Did you know you can send me questions? Submit them through the contact form on the jWAG site, or send them to me through Google+ or Facebook.

The answer to this question is a little technical, but this brings together a few different topics.

Here's the question:
My nephew's been enjoying his SEO...

These Old Daily Nuggets Are Now Rubbish

by
These Old Daily Nuggets Are Now Rubbish daily-golden-nugget-1077-98
Seventy-seven week days ago, when I reached the 1000th Nugget milestone, I got the idea that I should write a recap of all the technology that I wrote about that came and went since 2010 when I started this daily newsletter.

Although I really want to be nostalgic, I don't even have the time to look through 1000 posts to create a full list. But I'm going to give it a try and see where this goes, so let's have a little fun... Instead of learning something new today, I'll look at some old topics that I'v...

Choosing the Correct TLD for Your E-commerce Website

by
Choosing the Correct TLD for Your E-commerce Website 1576-daily-golden-nugget-962Internet trends within the jewelry industry are slowly moving towards e-commerce. It's second nature now for the everyday average consumer to search, learn, and pre-shop online long before they make the first step into a physical store.

Technologically, the jewelry industry is still lagging behind most other industries. Large jewelry chain stores have only recently figured out how to expand their in-store services into an online presence. Many e-commerce jewelry websites ar...

Difference Between m. and .mobi

by
We've mentioned quite a bit about mobile websites during the last few months, but we realized we never dug into the difference between the use of "m.jeweler.com" and "jeweler.mobi," so let's cover that topic today.

For our purposes, please replace the expression 'jeweler' with whatever your domain name is.

Back in 2005 the popular cell phone hardware and software companies supported a push to establish a new top level domain called dotMobi. The "mobi" is short for "mobile." Since cell phone speeds were also very slow back then something needed to be done to accommodate the growing trend of web browsing via cell phones.

It was hoped that the ".mobi" extension would tell users that the website was safe to browse on their cell phone, and it would be fast. In fact, if you registered a .mobi domain you had to sign a gua...

Testing Your Mobile Website for Dumb Phones

by
The past few months have seen a huge surge in recent blog posts and news articles about the mobile website. Perhaps 2011 will be the year mobile websites really come of age and awareness.

There's actually a domain name extension specifically for mobile websites too; it's .mobi.

As of today there are very few mobile websites that completely mimic their PC siblings. In fact, most of the time, a mobile website is rather simple and only has basic contact information or product and service information on it.

The last time we checked, there were reports of 54 million smartphones in the USA, but there were also reports of at least an equal or greater number of non-smart phones. Keep in mind that even a "dumb" phone is still able to surf the internet.

As your website company plans out the design of your new mobile w...

.info .me @ .my .name .mx

by
Our headline today is not random characters or cell phone text messaging gibberish; those are different types of domain name extensions that you could actually get instead of the typical .com.

Most likely, if you are reading this you already have an operational website of the .com or .net or .biz variety, and registering more domain names is the furthest thing from your mind. This was a perfectly understandable philosophy until 2008 when domain name registrations opened us up to so many additional possibilities.

Have you noticed in the last few years how advertisers have gone from using http://www.domain.com to www.domain.com, and now it's common to simply use domain.com?

Our recognition of website domain names has become common place, and the various extensions are less and less misunderstood every day. Naturally t...
