Diamonds Fine Jewelry #FridayFlopFix Review

by
Diamonds Fine Jewelry FridayFlopFix Review daily-golden-nugget-1470-62
It's time for the #FridayFlopFix where I review a random website from a local retail jeweler. The goal is to find some obvious mistakes, or flops, and suggest ways to improve upon, or fix, things.

This week, I'm looking for a candidate jeweler in Meridian, Idaho. This is the Google search results page I saw when looking for "jewelers Meridian, ID":

Your Estimations Are Wrong: Website Redesigns Take Longer Than You Think daily-golden-nugget-1389-50
Welcome to #ThrowbackThursday! Today I'm jumping back to a conversation about the troubles encountered when redesigning a website that I first covered in September 2011.

The process of redesigning a website can be broken into several different stages, including, but not limited to:
  1. Revaluation of website goals...

Harbour Pointe Jewelers Website Flop Fix daily-golden-nugget-1385-55
This is the #FridayFlopFix of the Daily Golden Nugget. I'm on the hunt for a retail jewelry store with a bad website, or at least with something that's broken so I can suggest a way to fix their flop.

My search this week led me to Mukilteo, WA, specifically the Google search for "jewelers in Mukilteo, WA" and these results:

Replace Ugly URLs With Easy To Understand Words

by
Replace Ugly URLs With Easy To Understand Words daily-golden-nugget-1249-80In this edition of #ThrowbackThursday, I'm revisiting the URL restructuring topic from March 15, 2011.

I consider URL restructuring to be one of the more advanced SEO techniques that you can employ after a deep review of how your website is performing in organic search. It's the process of turning your long, messy looking website addresses into shorter, easy to understand addresses.

Avoid the Faulty Mobile Redirect

by
Avoid the Faulty Mobile Redirect daily-golden-nugget-1207-5
In this edition of the Daily Golden Nugget, I'll cover one of the nagging mobile website issues that Google doesn't like any more. Well, I don't know if they ever liked it, but in this video they've clearly pointed it out.

It all started a few years ago when people first started dabbling in mobile websites. It's difficult to retrofit a desktop site to include a mobile version, unless you are willing to redesign the entire site again. Setting up a parallel mob...

How To Avoid Business Decline During a Website Redesign

How To Avoid Business Decline During a Website Redesign daily-golden-nugget-1142-17
The request has come far too often. I get a phone call from someone wanting to redesign their website. They tell me that their website is old, hasn't been updated, and they just want to start over.

Along with the request to redesign a website, I'm also usually told that they don't want to tell their current web programmer that they will be canceling service. Some business owners have decided that they want to file for a surprise divorce of their programmer.

While I can appreciate diss...

Champaign Jewelers Website Review

by
Champaign Jewelers Website Review daily-golden-nugget-1095-10
One of the common errors in the English language is the confusion between the words Champagne and Champaign.

Champagne is a region in France where the sparkling wine, champagne, comes from. Those French "regions" are similar to states in the US. Although there are vineyards all over the world that produce sparkling wine, it's not "champagne" unless the grapes were grown, and the wine was produced in that region of France. The capital city of Champagne is Epernay, which I visited a few years ago. I've include...

Upgrading Your Website Without Losing Organic Ranking

by
Upgrading Your Website Without Losing Organic Ranking 1154-daily-golden-nugget-1071
Two weeks ago I wrote a Nugget about the potential decline of your website's ranking when you launch a new website. The scenario proposed in that Nugget assumed you transferred all your existing content and SEO settings to the new website, but you changed your URL structure, causing the decline. Preventing that decline requires the setup of 301 redirects so ...

Why Did Organic Traffic Drop After Launching A New Site? 3941-daily-golden-nugget-1064
The Scenario:

The day has finally come when you've decided to upgrade your website to the latest and greatest content management system and website design. It's a big decision to make that leap considering how much time it will take and the cost to do it. It might be months before the new site is live.

You're going to have a lot of things to worry about during the process of setting up the new site. Difficult design issues, photography concerns, ...

Adding and Deleting Content From Your Website

by
Adding and Deleting Content From Your Website 8829-daily-golden-nugget-1049
Your business changes every day. Sometimes it's a small change like getting new inventory into your store and sometimes it's a big change like moving to a larger location.

The jewelry industry is highly competitive, and many times it's difficult to rank above your competitors if you don't have enough information on your website. You can't rely on a few educational pages, like the 4C's, and then small product catalog with images and simple descriptions. That's simply not enough in...

The Next Generation of Duplicate Content Resolutions 8764-daily-golden-nugget-912Since the last time I mentioned website duplicate content issues Google has made a few significant changes to the way they figure this out. Today I'll explain how their changes are making your life a little easier as a website owner.

The issue I explained in March 2013 was the duplicate content that is created when you have a website that allows visitors to see the same content ...

URL Shorteners Help Manage Long Ugly Links

by
URL Shorteners Help Manage Long Ugly Links 1393-daily-golden-nugget-646Over the last three days I spent a lot of time explaining how to use the Google Analytics UTM variable tracking to monitor the success rate of the links you share to the various social networks. The method I explained does require a bit of time to implement and then the links you share will become very long and ugly.

What I didn't explain yet is that sometimes those long and ugly shared links (URLs) can break as you use them, or when other people re-share them. Emails are notorious for breaking long website li...

Your SEO Guy Can Easily Kill Your Website

by
This is part 2 of 3 Daily Golden Nuggets. We are explaining the 3 common problems that can harm your jewelry website. Each is damaging in some way or another and will harm your ranking in Google's search results.

2. Programming glitches that bring down your website.

Programming a brand new website is tricky business. You should never, ever let a programmer make changes to live areas of your website without first testing them on a demo website. We've seen programmers with the best of intentions completely crash a website and not even realize it for hours.

By far the deadliest programming glitches take place when you are writing 302 and 301 redirect code by hand. Many SEO experts will dabble in making your URLs look nice for Google but mistakenly nullify your pages from Google instead.

Many SEO programmers w...

Disadvantages or Drawbacks of Getting a New Jewelry Website

by
We received an interesting question recently from a well established jewelry store. They wanted to know the drawbacks or disadvantages of "getting a new website." We thought the question was interesting enough to answer as today's Daily Golden Nugget.

To answer this question, let's first assume you have had a website for at least 2 years, and you are thinking of getting a new one.

So what are the "disadvantages or drawbacks of getting a new jewelry website?"

Before we itemize a list we'd first like to say that we really don't see a disadvantage of making a new website that runs with current standards of technologies, website usability, and design that appeals to the current market. With that said, let's outline the hurdles you need ...

301 Redirect Example

by
Today's Daily Golden Nugget is an example of how to create 301 redirects from your old website to your new website.

Many web design companies or consultants will build you a new jewelry website design without considering how it will destroy your current website's ranking.

We've covered the topic of "301 redirects" several times in our Nuggets and training. It is an important service that you need to ask your website guy to do. However you will need to do the redirects yourself if you've decided to do your website yourself or hire a young programmer.

So let's explain exactly how to create 301 redirects for your jewelry website.

First, you ...

Interesting Findings When Analyzing a Jewelry Website

by
While recently cleaning up an old jewelry website and the jewelry product catalog, we noticed something that dates back to our Daily Golden Nugget #183 (read it here http://bit.ly/erFrbU) and we'd like to tell you about it.

In #183 we said that you should include Alt and Title attributes for all the images on your website. Our feeling is that if you make your website user-friendly it will rank better. In this case, the Alt/Title image attributes are used by screen readers for the visually impaired.

We also mentioned in last Friday's Nugget #230 (read it here http://bit.ly/m1N2D0) that the Alt/Titles also help get your images indexed in Google's Image search.

Just to add some more proof of the importance of the Alt attribute, there is a report from...

URL Restructuring and 301 Redirecting

by
There are only 3 things you have direct control over that help entice users into clicking on your organic listing on the search results page.

1. The title of your page
2. The meta description of your page
3. The URL of your page

Most of the time, Google will not change your page title. Many times now, they will change your meta description to something that will better assist the user. On the other hand, they will never change the URL they show in green.

If your URL is long, it will appear with ellipses in order to truncate it into something useful for users.

Google explained in one of their training videos that they see more clicks on SERP pages that have shorter URLs than on long, convoluted ones. They also mentioned that users tend to click on pages that have keywords in the directory structure rather ...

Properly managing your multiple domain names

by
This week we've been telling you about domain names, different type of extensions and even strategies to register additional domain names for secondary websites.

Today we will explain the basics of what you could do with the secondary domain names.

Let's assume you take our suggestion and register the .net, .org, .us and .biz variants of your domain name. Once you own them, you could simply leave them deadheaded in your domain account which is the easiest strategy to protect your branding.

Another possibility is to 301 redirect them to your normal domain. If you have your domains registered through GoDaddy or Stellium Networks, you can use the built-in "301 Forwarding" feature. Again, the main reason for this is simply to protect your branded identity.

Another possibility is to point all the domain names dire...
